COGMED Working Memory Training

Why is Working Memory Important?

Working memory is the cognitive function responsible for keeping information online, manipulating it, and using it in your thinking. It is the way that you delegate the things you encounter to the parts of your brain that can take action. In this way, working memory is necessary for staying focused on a task, blocking out distractions, and keeping you updated and aware about what’s going on around you.

We use our working memory constantly in daily life. It helps us to perform efficiently and effectively in academic, professional, and social settings. Cogmed exists to help you improve your working memory to be better equipped to meet challenges.

Who is Affected by Working Memory Deficits?

There are three types of deficits in working memory: native, acquired, and environmental deficits. Some people are born with native deficits in working memory, including those with ADHD and other learning disabilities. Others acquire working memory deficits after traumas such as stroke victims, pediatric cancer survivors, and war veterans who have experienced traumatic brain injury. Aging is the most common cause of acquired working memory deficits. Still others are affected by stressful and demanding environments.

How To Train Your Brain

The Cogmed training method consists of 25 training sessions done online, each 30-45 minutes long (variations to that protocol are now fully available). Each session consists of a selection of various tasks that target the different aspects of working memory. The training is done online at home, in school, or at work. The standard program is five weeks long with five sessions every week. However, other variations are available. It is a rigorous program designed to improve working memory through intensive and systematic training.

The complete program includes: the initial interview, start-up session, weekly coach calls, access to the Cogmed Coaching Center, wrap-up session, and six months follow-up interview.

Training Programs

Cogmed JM logo

Cogmed JM is for pre-school children. It requires participation for 10-15 minutes every weekday for five weeks. The software guides the child through several rotating exercises each day which focus on encouraging the child to follow instructions and remain seated until the activities are completed. The exercises become more difficult in small steps, as the child’s ability to handle them improves.

Cogmed RM logo

Cogmed RM is for children ages 7 and up. It requires participation for approximately 30-45 minutes every weekday for five weeks. The software guides the trainee through multiple rotating exercises each day. These exercises are designed to train working memory. The complexity level of each exercise is automatically adjusted to stretch the trainee’s capacity to the maximum. Included in the program is an optional racing game that functions as an immediate reward after each day of training.

Cogmed QM logo

Cogmed QM is for adults and is clinically proven to strengthen and increase working memory capacity with rigorous and engaging exercises. Research and clinical evidence demonstrates that adults of all ages improved their working memory capacity by 20%, after as little as 30 minutes of training each weekday during five weeks. Cogmed QM is a comprehensive, computer-based training program that you can do at home. The software guides you through multiple rotating exercises each day. These exercises are designed to train working memory. The exercises automatically adjust in difficulty expanding your working memory capacity. Each trainee trains with a Cogmed Coach at a Cogmed Qualified Practice who monitors the training, tracks results, and provides motivation.
